Today is Rosh Hodesh!
The Talmud Bavli explains that for some time, no work was permitted on Rosh Hodesh as it was considered to be an important festival. Subsequently, commentators explained that while women should abstain from certain types of work, men should work normally. Why is Rosh Hodesh so special to women?
According to Rashi, when Benei Yisrael were in the midbar waiting for Moshe Rabbenu to return from Har Sinai, the men were told to gather all their wives' jewellery so it could be formed into the Egel haZahav, the Golden Calf. However, the women refused to do so. To reward them for this, HaKadosh Barukh Hu designated Rosh Hodesh to be a special day for women. There is a minhag, (a custom) for women to abstain from doing work on Rosh Hodesh and instead to have gatherings where they daven and learn together.
Hodesh Kislev Tov uMevorakh!
