Shabbat Kodesh Parashat Ki Tisa, Shabbat Parah

This Shabbat Kodesh is called Shabbat Parah ('Cow') since this time of the year that Benei Yisrael were required to purify themselves before coming to Yeroushalayim for the pilgrimage festival of Pesah, by using the ashes of the Parah Adoumah (Red 'Cow') to do so.

Hadlakat Nerot NY 5:28pm
Mossai Shabbat 6:29pm
Rabbenu Tam 7:00pm

4. Traditionally, the search for hamess has been performed by the light of a single wick candle (a multi-wick one is dangerous). Today, because of safety reasons and superior effectiveness in searching, a flashlight is preferable. A widespread custom is to use a candle for the first moments of the search for symbolic reasons and then switch to a flashlight. The Berakhah is recited even if one uses only a flashlight.
